Fillings are used to treat cavities and prevent further dental decay within our teeth. In the past, if you had a cavity, your options were limited to unsightly metals that distracted from your smile. Today, cavities are treated with composite resins, also known as tooth-colored fillings.

What is a tooth-colored filling?

Created from a mixture of plastic resins and silica fillers, composite resins mimic the look of your natural teeth. Their value is far more than cosmetic, as these fillings also provide a greater support system within the tooth, uniquely bonding to the existing tooth instead of simply acting as a cover.

How long do composite fillings last?

These fillings are an incredibly durable solution for small to midsize cavities. They are fracture-resistant and able to withstand the stress of daily chewing. Lasting many years, fillings have much life before replacements or repairs may be needed. The general rule is the larger the filling, the shorter the life expectancy.

How is my cavity filled?

When we determine that you have a cavity, either through an oral exam or X-rays, we will schedule you for a filling. During a filling, we will remove the decay from your cavity and clean out the affected area. We will then fill the space with the tooth-colored resin and shape the material as necessary to make the filling look like your natural tooth.

How can I tell if I need a filling?

If you think you may have a cavity, it is important to come see us right away. Only a dental professional will be able to tell you with certainty if you have a cavity that needs to be filled. If you are having tooth pain or sensitivity, visible holes or deformations with your teeth, pain associated with foods that are hot, cold or sweet, or visible discoloration on the tooth, schedule an appointment to come see us.

How can I care for my composite fillings?

Luckily, composite fillings are easily managed. Simply maintain your regular dental health practices and keep up with your oral hygiene. If you are brushing and flossing regularly and coming to see us for a check-up every six months, your fillings should last for years to come.
